The beverage industry plays a significant role in Thailand's consumer goods sector. As of February 2022, the beverage industry was forecast to grow by 2.8 percent, ranking second among the consumer goods with the highest growth rate, with packaged food ranking first. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the beverage market was heavily affected due to various restrictions, such as the temporary shutdown of bars, clubs, and restaurants. The overall trading of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages decreased as the demand reduced. The beverage industry was forecast to bounce back in the upcoming few years as the pandemic situation eases and the demand recovers.

The local production and sales of beverages in Thailand

Thailand has the capacity to produce various kinds of beverages. In 2020, there were approximately 420 registered beverage factories, with the majority being production factories of non-alcoholic drinks. Undoubtedly, the production volume of drinking water was the highest among other types of non-alcoholic drinks, reaching around 331.3 million liters in May 2022. As for the production of alcoholic beverages, the production volume of beers was the highest, with about 173.4 million liters in that same month. In general, 90 percent of the beverage production output goes to local consumption, with another ten percent for export. Usually, the leading distribution channels for beverages in Thailand are local retailers. Although, online platforms have become popular among beverage consumers as well. In 2021, the online spending on beverages in Thailand amounted to almost four billion U.S. dollars.

Leading brands in Thai beverage industry

Some of the leading non-alcoholic beverage brands in Thailand are Crystal, Singha, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Fanta. In the past years, Crystal had the highest share of the bottled water market in the country. Crystal is a drinking water brand operated under Sermsuk PCL. The company also produces well-known Thai carbonated beverages like Est Cola. As for alcoholic drinks, Boon Rawd Brewery is the leader in beer production. The company produces popular local beers such as Singha and Leo beer. In 2020, Leo beer held the highest share of the beer market in Thailand, amounting to 45 percent.
