Substantive quantities of chocolate products are imported into Canada at a stable rate of about 1.02 billion U.S. dollars every year. However, Canada is also a major exporter of chocolate and exports exceed imports by about 600 million U.S. dollars. Canadian chocolate exports go almost exclusively to the United States. Additionally, the United States is by far the biggest exporter of chocolate to Canada, making it the central trading partner for chocolate. Other notable providers of chocolate products for import to Canada are Switzerland and Mexico.

Consumption

One of the exports from Switzerland is Lindt chocolate. The premium brand is the favorite chocolate brand for 30 percent of Canadians, followed by Cadbury. More consumers may look towards artisanal and organic chocolates if the inflation of prices for sugar and confectionary in Canada continues to rise. As the price level rises the allure of more luxurious consumption may seem more reasonable when consumers are already spending more on their Mars bar. Canadian chocolate consumption is on average 5.6 kilograms per person annually.
