Coffee production worldwide

Throughout the 2018/19 period, over 170 million coffee bags, which consist of 60 kilograms’ worth of coffee each, were produced worldwide, making it the marketing year with the highest production numbers so far. In the period that followed, the global coffee consumption decreased to roughly 165 million bags. Almost half of the world’s coffee gets produced in South America: in 2020, about 88 million 60-kilogram bags were filled in this region. Specifically, Brazil was the country that produced the highest amount of coffee bags in South America and the rest of the world that year.

Coffee imports v exports

While Brazil was the largest producer of coffee in the world in 2020, the United States generated the highest coffee market revenue worldwide in the following year. The North American country generated approximately 81 billion U.S. dollars, while Brazil, which ranked second, generated 38 billion U.S. dollars. Total coffee imports were forecast to total around 134 million 60-kilogram bags within the 2021/22 period, while total export numbers are expected to reach more than 136 million. In 2020, the United States was the world’s top coffee importer, followed by Germany, France, and Italy. 2020’s leading exporters were Brazil, Switzerland, and Germany. Coffee has become a popular Fairtrade product and saw a worldwide increase in terms of UTZ certified production in 2020. Over 1.2 million metric tons’ worth of sustainable coffee was produced in that year.
