Orange juice market in the U.S. - statistics & facts

Orange juice is a liquid extract of the orange fruit, which is processed by either squeezing or churning the fresh produce. The juice can be made from several varieties of the fruit, including blood orange and tangerine, as well as the most widely known navel oranges. Concentrated orange juice, an innovation spurred by the advent of World War II, is another form of the product which has captivated American consumers since the late 1940s. During the war American soldiers consumed lemon crystals to get their intake of vitamin C, but found their taste unsavory. The U.S. government then went about developing a beverage that would be as nutritious as the crystals, palatable, and be easy to transport without spreading diseases. The scientists tasked with developing the product were able to do this by 1949, and from then on processing plants in Florida have produced millions of gallons of concentrated orange juice.

Orange juice production and consumption

The United States ranked in second place among the leading orange juice producers in the world, with a production volume of 245,000 metric tons in 2020/121. Brazil was the clear frontrunner in the market, producing just over one million metric tons in the same year. Domestic consumption of orange juice in the United States was forecast to reach 497,000 metric tons in 2020/21. Orange juice consumption has witnessed a substantial decline in the United States in recent years. This could be caused in part by the questioning of the beverage’s health qualities. Regardless of its high concentration of vitamin C, orange juice also has a high concentration of simple sugars, even compared to soft drinks.

Leading American brands

Tropicana Pure Premium, Simply Orange, and Florida’s Natural are some of America’s leading refrigerated orange juice brands. Private label or store branded orange juice products are also popular, with sales of over 650 million U.S. dollars. Private label brands accounted for roughly a fifth of all refrigerated orange juice sales in the U.S. in 2021.
