Wine market in Canada - statistics & facts

Wine is an alcoholic beverage produced by fermenting grapes and sometimes other fruits or plants. With numerous strains available from around the world, the type of wine grapes used can affect the characteristics of the wine produced. Wine may vary according to its level of sweetness, acidity, tannin, flavor, and body. Wines are typically classed as white or red, sparkling, semi-sparkling or still, dessert and fortified. Ice wine, first produced in North America in British Columbia in 1972, is a variety of dessert wine which is made from frozen grapes. Due to the cold winters, Canada remains a top producer and exporter of ice wine.

Around 260 million hectoliters of wine is produced globally each year. Some of the leading wine producing countries include Italy, France, and Spain. Despite Canada not appearing in the list of top wine producers, it is home to nearly 500 wineries. Provincially, the largest producers of wine in Canada were British Columbia and Ontario, with an accumulated 411 wineries.

Retail sales of wine in Canada are forecast to exceed 13.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, showing that Canadians have a liking for the beverage. According to per capita sales, consumers in Quebec purchase the most wine and those in Saskatchewan purchase the least. The volume of bottled wine imported to Canada has continually increased in recent years, with France being the most popular import partner in 2020. Canadians have changed some of their wine purchasing behavior due to the coronavirus pandemic. Compared to three years ago, consumers were willing to spend additional money for wine intended for occasions at home. Additionally, Canadian wine consumers were much more likely to switch to wines from Canada instead of old and new world wines.
