Christmas decorations market - statistics & facts

For many people around the world, Christmas is a time of excitement and celebration. Whether this is due to religious reasons, spending time with family, exchanging presents or simply time off work, there are many things to look forward to. One important way that people express and boost this holiday feeling is by putting up decorations. Whether at home, in the workplace or around town, decorations such as Christmas trees, lights and nativity scenes lend a festive atmosphere. Most US consumers said that they usually put up their Christmas tree soon after Thanksgiving. Similarly, the majority of UK shoppers think the beginning of December is an acceptable time to start seeing decorations in shops.

International trade

The main supplier of Christmas decorations in 2020 was China, by a massive margin. In fact, almost all Christmas decorations supplied globally were made by China. The same is true for Christmas tree light exports, although Cambodia also made a decent contribution. Predictably, the main importers of these products were largely Christian countries, with the U.S leading the way. The United Kingdom, Canada and Germany were all big importers as well.
Within Europe, the Nordic countries play an important role in the production and export of Christmas trees. Denmark sent their trees all around the continent in 2020. Germany had a particularly large share of Danish Christmas tree exports.

Consumer spending

The importance of Christmas decorations is reflected in consumers’ budgets around the world. Decorations rank alongside food and presents as the most significant holiday expenditures. In Cameroon in 2021, households spent 69% of their entire Christmas budgets on decorations on average, according to one calculation. In the same year the average Canadian household spent even more on Christmas decorations than on Christmas food.
