Black Friday in the United Kingdom (UK) - Statistics and Facts

The United Kingdom takes Black Friday quite seriously. In 2021, the UK accounted for over 10 percent of all global Black Friday searches online. Due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 saw a significant drop in the total value of Black Friday spending in the country, but in 2021, consumers are forecast to spend a record amount over the Black Friday weekend in the UK, most of which will be through online channels. Compared to the previous year, growth in Black Friday spending is forecast to be over 20 percent for online sales. Although paling in comparison with the stellar growth in online sales, in-store Black Friday spending is expected to grow by 7.3 percent. In fact, a survey conducted with global consumers revealed that around 40 percent of shoppers were likely to choose physical stores for this year's Black Friday shopping.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Although this globally participated mega sales event is commonly known and referred to as Black Friday, special deals on offer spread over the following weekend (also known as Black or Cyber Weekend) and Monday (Cyber Monday). In 2021, UK shoppers were expected to spend just as much on Cyber Monday as they did on Black Friday, both in terms of online and offline. Over the past three years, consumer interest in both Black Friday and Cyber Monday grew, with over half of UK consumers stating they were interested in the events.

Opportunity for retailers and marketers

Black Friday is arguably the most anticipated and advertised event of the last quarter of the calendar year, as this is when the retail sector typically sees a considerable boost in consumer spending. In the United Kingdom, both in 2020 and 2021, around 7 in every 10 consumer brands were participating in the Black Friday sales events, offering special discounts. For most consumers, the leading brand that inspired shopping during the Black Friday period was Amazon. According to forecasts gauging consumer interest in brands across various industries, brands such as JD Sports and Zara were expected to see the highest demand in the fashion category during Black Friday 2021.
