Organic food market in France - Statistics & Facts

Over the past decades, growing concerns about the environment have spurred the establishment of organic farming. This agricultural method of food production and processing, which is mindful of the impact of the agri-food sector on the environment, follows a specific set of rules. For instance, the use of certain pesticides and artificial fertilizers is forbidden. Likewise, meat, eggs, and dairy products must come from livestock raised under specific living conditions to be considered organic. These are only a few of the requirements needed to obtain one of the special organic certifications that France, like many other countries, requires for producers to be able to market their food as “organic.”

Other significant factors to this success are general health concerns, combined with an overall positive perception of organic foods. The demand for organic products has been increasing consistently since the turn of the century, with French households’ consumption of organic products more than doubling in the last five years. Most purchased, and mainly in hyper and supermarkets, are organic fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.

Naturally, as the demand for these products has been increasing, so have production efforts. For instance, the number of organic farms and hectares of land dedicated to organic farming have continuously been going up, with no sign of stopping anytime soon. Indeed, with climate change showing no sign of slowing down and crises such as the ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are choosing to make sustainability a priority.
