Video on demand in the Netherlands - statistics & facts

Dutch audiences have a lot of options for watching video content. Not only were there a lot of VOD services to choose from, they also took up the most time spent on digital devices. According to a 2019 survey, people in the Netherlands spend roughly six billion minutes a day using digital media. More than one quarter of this time is devoted to watching video on demand, a percentage higher than, for example, playing video games or keeping up with social media. Consumers spent 167 minutes each day watching linear TV in April 2020, a year-to-year increase of around seven percent. A bigger increase, however, can be found among SVOD services like Netflix and Disney Plus. People spent 50 minutes daily on non-linear television, an increase of over 50 percent when compared to April 2019.

See who is next

Netflix is by far the biggest video streaming service in the Netherlands, with a revenue that surpassed physical DVD and/or Blue-ray sales, TVOD and the market size of its direct competitors. In 2018, Netflix reached an estimated revenue of over 200 million euros, an increase of roughly ten percent compared to 2017. The SVOD service also had over three million Dutch subscribers in 2019, making it the most frequently used online video platform in the Netherlands. Subscriber figures slowed down somewhat, however, due to high penetration. This was not the case for another streaming service. Since its world-exclusive launch in 2019, Disney+ saw a fast growth of downloads.

Life is a (digital) highway

Disney+ arrived in the Netherlands before it did in the United States and Canada. According to domestic media reports, one of the reasons for this was the relatively fast digital infrastructure in the country. More than 40 percent of broadband connections at the end of 2018 had an average internet speed of 100 Mbps or more. Streaming video is therefore relatively easy in the Netherlands. This is reflected in the devices used for VOD. In 2018, for example, roughly 35 percent of Dutch respondents used apps found on a Smart TV on a weekly basis. Smartphones also became increasingly popular for watching television, video, or movies. In 2019, 58 percent of Millennials (ages 23 to 37) used online videos on their smartphone in 2019.
